The Future is Now: Inaugural Africa Career Summit
On the 29th of June 2024, the inaugural Africa Career Summit brought youth month to an innovative close. The vibrant city of Sandton, Johannesburg recently played host to the first-ever Africa Career Summit, a transformative event designed to empower the Africa’s ever-growing workforce. South Africa celebrates youth day every year in the month of June and the Africa Career Summit is an innovative event that will not only inspire those with thriving careers but those who are yet to climb the career ladder, therefore shaping the Africa career landscape forever. The summit marks a transformative moment for the continent’s workforce, bringing together industry leaders, innovators, and aspiring professionals from various parts of the continent – simultaneously supporting career growth and Pan-Africanism.
Vision & Objectives
“My dream and the impact we wanted to have, was to change the way Africans approach their careers, and working with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds – giving them access to information that we find so easy to hear in Johannesburg, Lagos or Kampala”, says founder of the Africa Career Summit, Dr. Vumile Msweli. The Africa Career Summit was conceived as a platform to address the unique challenges and opportunities within the African job market, this while raising funds to continue bridging the gap between aspiring professionals in disadvantaged areas and access to information that shapes the African workforce.
Dr Vumile Msweli is also the founder and CEO of Hesed Consulting and Hesed Africa Foundation- where the vision all started, later birthing the Africa Career Summit. The summit particularly focuses on fostering innovation, promoting diversity, and enhancing career development, providing participants with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in an increasingly globalized economy.

“The theme for the inaugural Africa Career Summit is summed up by three things, access, acceleration, and awards. Giving aspiring professionals access to information and network, acceleration and growth in their careers, and awarding excellence”, said Dr. Vumile Msweli. The clear goal is to empower African professionals and/or young, aspiring professionals by connecting them with industry leaders and offering them unparalleled opportunities for growth and development.

Networking opportunities
Founder of the summit, Dr. Vumile mentioned that one of the key goals of the summit was to give aspiring professionals and industry leaders the opportunity to network. Attendees had the chance to connect and network with top employers and executives while exploring job opportunities. The summit’s innovative networking workshop also enabled participants learn more about the power and effective ways to implement networking.
Passing the baton
The speakers not only shared the tips and tricks of making it in Africa’s career workforce but shared their inspiring success stories – touching on how their careers started and the importance of finding purpose. If there’s one thing the summit solidified, is the critical relationship between career development and finding purpose.
Global speaker, award-winning entrepreneur, and keynote speaker at the inaugural Africa Career Summit, Vusi Thembekwayo spoke about the importance of professionals acting based on their calling or not their position. Position is something that changes, one will not always be an intern or a junior, they might be called to be a part of the functional side of the business. So professionals should always be aware of what they do or say, to avoid the negative impact of their actions as and when they do what they’ve been called to do.

Attendees left the summit feeling inspired and equipped with new skills and connections. The Africa Career Summit has made a significant impact by providing a platform for learning, networking, and career development: living up to the trio theme of Access, Acceleration, and Awarding. As Africa continues to grow and evolve, events like this will play a crucial role in shaping the continent’s future, ensuring that its workforce is equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
