Popi’s travel content creator journey didn’t start as a typical yearning to see the world, but more with in-depth storytelling of African countries. The content creator documents and shares her journey through Africa, capturing the essence of its cultures and landscapes, from Kenya’s scenic vistas to Ghana’s golden sunsets. Not only does she capture the true essence of the continent, but she’s managed to capture the hearts of many through her charismatic nature and authenticity. Through this, we get to experience the heart and soul of Africa through her lens.

Where it all started

Popi Sibiya is a travel content creator who grew up in Qonce (also known as King Williams Town), a town in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. “There was nothing about my upbringing that stood out to the point where I remember as a child, I wanted to be an adult”, Popi says. The content creator describes her upbringing as pretty much normal as she further adds that she’s always known that she’ll be something great in life.

With a larger-than-life personality, Popi has always felt that she’s destined for big things in life, things that would truly reflect who she is. It all started when she was teaching English in China when she realized that teaching kindergartens wasn’t all too satisfying for her. The travel content creator didn’t want her shine to be limited only to the children she was teaching, she wanted people to witness her shine that surpasses her just being a teacher. “It all started when I was on leave, and I did a road trip from South Africa to Kenya and my audience enjoyed it, and I felt there’s something here. Then I thought I should start traveling full-time”, she says.

Typically, when you think of traveling, you think of flights and all that, but what also makes Popi’s journey unique is her forms of transportation to these different African countries and the influence of it all. Her preferred modes of transport include but are not limited to buses, trains, and ships. These modes of transport are more than just transport but a way of storytelling, during her traveling journeys she comes across different people from different cultural backgrounds while witnessing the life and true essence of these places. Her journey is more than just about discovering new places but about understanding and sharing the stories of the people she meets along the way. Her audience gets to witness and experience these different countries through her.

Diversity in Africa: South African Xhosas vs. Zimbabwean Xhosas

Africa is a continent with 54 countries in it, thus making it continent rich in cultural diversity. Over a billion people reside in the beautiful continent, speak more than 2,000 languages, and belong to a variety of ethnic groups. Various traditions, religious practices, music, art, and cuisines are a great reflection of the diversity that graces Africa. Each African country showcases a unique blend of cultures that have been shaped by historical events, geographical factors, and social interactions. From the diverse Maasai traditions in Kenya, the detailed Zulu beadwork in South Africa, to the historic pyramids of Egypt, all illustrate the rich and intricate cultural heritage of the African continent. This cultural wealth underscores reflects unique identities of African communities, enhancing the vibrant social tapestry of the region.

One of the countries that Popi traveled to is Zimbabwe, where she met the Xhosa people who stay there. You may be asking yourself how similar or different are they to the Xhosas in South Africa. As a Xhosa lady, it became easier for Popi to speak to them, as she described how similar the Zimbabwean Xhosas are similar to the South African Xhosas. According to her, the main differentiation between them is a bit of Ndebele dialect that’s present in the Xhosas of Zimbabweans.

Funding Popi’s travel expenses

The travel content creator’s dream of going to Nigeria led to the birth of her funding journey. It all started with her love for the Afrobeats genre, which led to her yearning to witness the country where this genre was born (Nigeria). She couldn’t afford a flight so she whipped out a road map and noticed that Ghana wasn’t too far from Nigeria. She once posted about how she wanted to go to Ghana someone from her audience told her about a competition that the popular South African podcast, Podcast & Chill was running. The competition was about standing a chance to win a trip to Ghana, unfortunately Popi only got to 4th place. However, this encouraged the content creator even further, she believed that her supporters (Popsicles) could see this dream through, and indeed they were able to – funding the Ghana trip and many that followed.

Reflections

Popi Sibiya’s journey is a testament to the power of storytelling and the role of content creators in bridging cultural gaps. She exposes the world to true African culture, not just tourist attractions that people see in magazines or social media. By sharing the stories of the people she meets along the way and the cultures she experiences, the content creator continues to inspire countless others to explore and appreciate the richness of Africa. Popi’s yearning and love for traveling the African continent goes beyond tourist attractions or the fancy perks of traveling. As she travels, she wants to experience through people and people to experience through her.

When asked about the countries she looks forward to traveling to (besides Africa), the content creator said Europe is the next step. She looks forward to traveling and uncovering the culture that graces Europe.

Through Popi’s lens, we are reminded that Africa is not a single story but a collection of countless narratives, each contributing to the richness of human culture and ‘Ubuntu’.
